Overview

Department of Radiation Oncology

Rotations

The academic year is divided into six block rotations, during which each resident works solely with one attending. This schedule gives the residents exposure to each disease site several times during their residency. Faculty expectations correlate with each resident’s level of training. Residents are expected to attend tumor boards and conferences with their attending.

Call

Residents take call for one week at a time and are required to stay on campus until all patients have been treated. The call schedule is arranged in by seniority with first year residents averaging 6-7 calls per year and decreased call responsibilities in subsequent years.

Training Sites

The residents primarily see patients at the University of Miami Sylvester Cancer Center, Jackson Memorial Hospital, and University of Miami Hospital; all located within walking distance on the Miami Health District. See the Facilities and Technology tab for details about each site. Satellite campuses of the University of Miami Sylvester Cancer Center are located in Deerfield Beach, FL and Coral Gables, FL.

Research

Our residents have 6-12 months of protected research time in their PGY-4 year to dedicate to projects of their choosing. We also encourage our residents to get involved with other research projects during their clinical rotations. As part of our commitment to the residents, we provide support to any resident presenting their work at a national meeting.

Salary/Benefits

Salaries and benefits are re-negotiated yearly between the hospital and our resident union (CIR). 2021-2022 figures include a PGY-2 salary of approximately $61,736, with an additional $2,600/year professional allowance, $2000 educational stipend and $50 bi-weekly pay supplement. The department also provides each resident with an additional yearly allowance for educational expenses that can be used for books, conferences, or other educational materials. Residents are allotted four total weeks of vacation time in addition to two total weeks of sick time per academic year. The vacation time may be taken at the discretion of the residents, but may not exceed two consecutive weeks. Comprehensive medical and dental insurance is offered as part of the resident compensation package. A Jackson First HMO plan is available at $0 premiums for residents. Residents are also given a meal card for use at the Jackson Memorial Hospital cafeteria as well as a daily allowance at the University of Miami cafeteria. Parking is readily available in multiple on-campus parking garages for a nominal monthly fee.
