AAC Clinic
Through our Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Clinic, we provide specialized evaluations and access to communication tools and technology that are individualized to each patient’s specific needs.
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Multidisciplinary Clinic
We take pride in providing high quality, compassionate care in a multi-specialty setting for patients and families coping with ALS. We serve our patients and their families through all stages of the disease. Of key importance is our combined approach to clinical care and research. The close collaboration of our expert researchers and clinical team facilitates our patients’ participation in groundbreaking research and clinical trials.
Electromyography Lab
Electromyography and nerve conduction studies include electrical stimulation in addition to a small needle with an internal microphone to allow us to better assess the peripheral nerves, muscles, and neuromuscular junction.
Miami VA Multidisciplinary ALS Clinic
Miami VA ALS multi-disciplinary clinic is led by Dr Ashok Verma and provides comprehensive care for our ALS patients. The clinic includes a nurse, physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech pathologist, clinical psychologist, social worker, respiratory therapist, and SCI physician.
Muscular Dystrophy Association Care Center and Charcot-Marie-Tooth Center of Excellence
Our two neuromuscular genetic clinical programs, the Muscular Dystrophy Association Care Center and the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Center of Excellence are integrated as one neurogenetics clinic. One-hour new patient evaluations occur every Monday afternoon and multidisciplinary follow up visits are scheduled every Wednesday afternoon. Our multidisciplinary team includes a nurse practitioner, an occupational therapist, a genetic counselor, a dietician, an orthotist and a social worker and offers a comprehensive 3-hour session that covers all dimensions of care.
Myositis clinic
Myositis clinic is dedicated to seeing patients with suspected myositis for new diagnoses in addition to patients already diagnosed with myositis for treatment management. Major conditions treated in the myositis clinic include: dermatomyositis, polymyositis, anti-synthetase syndrome, inclusion body myositis, and overlap myositis (myositis associated with connective tissue diseases). We collaborate with our colleagues in rheumatology and pulmonology to provide a multidisciplinary approach.
Nerve and Muscle Pathology
We regularly review specimens of muscle and nerve pathology with our neuropathologist, Dr. Sakir Gultekin.
Second visit clinic
After receiving a diagnosis of ALS, we are here to help answer questions, build a management plan, and discuss research opportunities.
Wheelchair clinic
Our wheelchair clinic is staffed by physical therapists and healthcare providers who perform thorough evaluations to design tailored-fit wheelchairs that meet the individual needs of ALS patients with impaired mobility.
University of Miami Neuromuscular Clinic and Miami VA Neuromuscular Clinic
At our neuromuscular clinics, we see a wide variety of diseases including those that affect the peripheral nerves, the muscle, and the neuromuscular junction. Some examples include but are not limited to: peripheral neuropathies including acquired, genetic, and inflammatory; small fiber neuropathies, muscular dystrophies, myositis, motor neuron diseases including ALS, myasthenia gravis, CIDP.
