The Department of Cell Biology participates in a variety of teaching activities for medical and graduate students.
Leading the department’s medical education program is Dr. Thomas Champney, a full-time medical educator, who is part of a broader group of lecturers and lab instructors that includes faculty from this department, from other departments at the Miller School of Medicine and from the physical therapy department on the Coral Gables Campus. The content and organization of the courses in both the traditional MD program and the more recent MD / MPH program are continually being reviewed and updated to reflect new information from research and clinical experience. The Cell Biology teaching faculty consistently provide expertise in cell biology, histology, neuroanatomy, embryology, and gross anatomy to both medical education programs. The excellence of the teaching faculty’s instruction and innovative methods has, over the years, garnered numerous teaching awards for the department and individual faculty members. Some of these awards include:
- Best Basic Science Department Teaching Award
- Teacher of the Year
- George Paff Excellence in Teaching Awards
- Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society Award
- University of Miami Medical Women Award
- Iron Arrow
