The HIV/AIDS and Emerging Infectious Diseases Institute (HEIDI) at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine was established in 2015 to stimulate innovation, support interdisciplinary collaboration, and create synergy among the various HIV/AIDS initiatives and programs at the university’s medical campus with the goal of speeding significant advances in understanding, preventing, and treating HIV infection and AIDS associated malignancies.

With the highest rates of new HIV infections in the U.S., Miami is at the epicenter of the epidemic. In alignment with state and national Ending the Epidemic efforts, HEIDI is dedicated to cutting-edge HIV prevention programs and cure research for a zero-transmissions future.

HEIDI is comprised of three arms, each with a specific area of focus. They include:

  • The Comprehensive AIDS Program (CAP) at the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine, which facilitates quality HIV/AIDS healthcare services for more than 3,000 patients in Miami Dade County.
  • The Miami Center for AIDS Research (CFAR), which coordinates and provides support for the university’s HIV/AIDS research activities in basic, clinical, and behavioral sciences.
  • The State of Florida Funding Initiative (FLDOH), which leads the charge to develop a state funding mechanism to support high impact HIV/AIDS research projects at the Institute and other research institutions.
