As a key contributor to the Ending the HIV Epidemic initiative in the United States, the HIV/AIDS and Emerging Infectious Diseases Institute's (HEIDI) main goal is to foster strong relationships with individuals and entities within South Florida and the greater community to support scientific investigations into HIV prevention and cure efforts.
In line with this, the Institute is proud to be partnered with the Palm Beach Infectious Diseases Institute (PBIDI) founded by Dr. Istvan Krisko, M.D., Ph.D., FACP and the Miami Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) directed by Dr. Savita Pahwa, M.D.

Director, Miami Clinical Translational Science Institute (CTSI)We are sad to announce the passing of one of our board members, Dr. Ralph Sacco. His brilliance and expertise will be sorely missed and we feel lucky to have benefited from his keen guidance since HEIDI first began in 2015.
Dr. Sacco was a distinguished stroke neurologist and researcher recognized nationally and international for his work on brain health, stroke, and cardiovascular diseases prevention. He was recognized by numerous awards, like the WSO’s Global Leadership Award, the AHA’s Gold Heart Award, Distinguished National Leadership Award, and the 2022 Distinguished Scientist Award. He served his patients and community through a diverse range of programs and research, most notably the founding of the Florida Stroke Registry and the Florida-Puerto Rico Collaboration to Reduce Stroke Disparities and the Family Study of Stroke Risk and Carotid Atherosclerosis.
Dr. Sacco has left us with an extraordinary legacy of determination, caring, and impactful science.
