Currently, coronary artery interventions like stents effectively restore blood flow, but as many as 30 percent of patients need follow-up treatment, with sometimes fatal repercussions.

Renowned physician-scientist Yiannis Chatzizisis, M.D., Ph.D., chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, is deploying leading-edge computational tools to help interventional cardiologists change this paradigm.

One of his many initiatives focuses on creating a "digital twin" of a patient’s heart arteries, allowing physicians to clearly visualize the diseased area and model the effectiveness of different stents. The process can encompass near-infinite scenarios and obtain detailed insights into stent performance and technique optimization, all prior to deployment.

“AI tools can rapidly, precisely and accurately analyze imaging data to guide care, while taking some of the subjectivity out of diagnosis,” said Dr. Chatzizisis.

The Department of Informatics and Health Data Science is leveraging powerful collaborations to accelerate the integration of AI into clinical care. The Project INSPIRE initiative, created in partnership with Amazon Web Services, aims to support the Miller School’s development as a leading center for technology and innovation in health care.

“By breaking through silos and harmonizing digital activities, we can make our university a beacon of hope,” said Azizi Seixas, Ph.D., interim chair of the department.

Another promising endeavor, HARMONI, leverages generative AI to open new avenues for research and discovery, making significant strides in the way we understand and utilize data.

Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center recently launched a new digital platform, My Wellness Research, to integrate patient-generated lifestyle data with genomic, imaging, clinical, and sociodemographic factors. The program enables teams to monitor patients and populations, detect trends, understand the impact of interventions, and quickly respond with automated tools and human support.

Emergency situations are heightened when patients are unable to identify themselves to emergency responders due to cognitive deficit or temporary incapacitation. Patient identity includes information like medical history, previous diagnoses, medications, known allergies, and so much more—all critical to the best patient outcomes.

To solve this problem, the Gordon Center for Simulation and Innovation in Medical Education is turning to AI-driven facial recognition software. During an initial testing phase, the teams found that paramedics were able to use the software to make better decisions about treatment, tailor care to patient preferences, and improve outcomes.
