The applicant must be listed as the first author to be  eligible for an award. Awards will be available for each Presentation Category (Basic Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Public Health, Case Reports) as well as awards for best overall Oral Presentation, Chalk Talk, and Poster.  The Eastern-Atlantic Student Research Forum reserves the right to deny acceptances to the forum if, in its judgment, the abstracts submitted are of insufficient merit.

All abstracts for Oral and Poster presentations are initially evaluated for acceptance based upon the criteria set forth in the Abstract Guidelines.

Presentation Awards: Students will be judged according to the scoring rubric provided in their acceptance email. The judging criteria include completeness of study, organization, originality, methodology, presentation quality, and handling of questions. The sum of the judging scores will determine winners in several categories including separate first and second place awards in each presentation category.

Alving Award: The Dr. Carl and Barbara Alving Endowed Award will be presented to the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine medical student who has had the most outstanding research achievement for the year. The student would win a medal and a substantial unrestricted personal monetary award to encourage the student to pursue medical research. 

Oral Presentation

Fifteen minutes will be allotted for each oral presentation. Participants must limit their presentation to a 10 minute talk followed by a 5 minutes Q&A session. Oral presentations will be judged on content, clarity of communication, , and the presenter’s ability to answer questions. 

Chalk Talk Presentation

Chalk-Talks are a short-form oral presentation, with 5 minutes to present and no Q&A session. Presenters may have a maximum of 5 slides for their Chalk Talk.

Chalk Talk presenters will be judged on quality of content, clarity of communication, and the presenter’s ability to create a succinct and complete narrative through their presentation.

Poster Presentation

Accepted presenters will be assigned to one of the two poster sessions and be expected to stay in range of their poster throughout the session. Poster board dimensions are at maximum 60” wide x 48” tall.

Judges will walk around the session and evaluate posters on content quality, clarity of communication, and the presenter’s ability to answer questions.
