The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s RISE (Research, Innovation & Scholarly Engagement) program is a transformative initiative designed to nurture, recruit and retain the next generation of physician-scientists and research leaders. Led by Dr. Alessia Fornoni and Dr. Alexis Sloan, RISE connects high school students, undergraduates, medical students, trainees, and early-career faculty with the resources, mentorship, and funding opportunities they need to build successful research careers.
Vision
Nationally, the physician-scientist workforce is shrinking, with significant attrition at critical stages. RISE is determined to reverse this trend by connecting with students, trainees and junior faculty and introducing them to the Miller School’s abundant research opportunities.
Guiding Principles
The RISE program is dedicated to cultivating the physician-scientist pipeline through a culture of mentorship, opportunity, and innovation.
We aim to:
- Develop, recruit and retain research talent across the academic pipeline, from high school to faculty.
- Enhance medical and graduate scholarly education.
- Support research mentoring and talent development.
- Promote vertical integration of scholarly education.
- Advocate for mentor-mentee programs, peer mentoring and faculty development committees to help trainees navigate complex academic pathways.
- Facilitate national networking and sponsorship.
