Message from the AVP of Public Safety

Department of Public Safety

The University of Miami Medical Campus Department of Public Safety is dedicated to safeguarding people, property, and operations within our complex healthcare and academic environment.

Our mission is to ensure a safe, secure, and welcoming campus that supports patient care, research, education, and daily operations. We achieve this through a professional and proactive approach that emphasizes prevention, preparedness, and partnership.
Pedro Leal, Assistant Vice President, Public Safety

In today's ever-evolving security landscape, our department addresses a wide range of risks—from theft and unauthorized access to fraud, social engineering, and other emerging threats. We do this by combining highly trained personnel, modern security technology, and coordinated response protocols.

Public Safety operates through an integrated, multi-division model that includes uniformed operations, crime prevention, security systems, access control, identification services, parking and transportation, and emergency coordination. Continuous training, accountability, and collaboration with campus and health system partners are central to our approach.

Safety is a shared responsibility. We encourage all members of the University community to remain vigilant, safeguard personal and institutional information, and promptly report any suspicious or unsafe activity.

We are committed to service, professionalism, and continuous improvement in support of the University of Miami Health System’s mission.
