Three-Year M.D. Curriculum

One afternoon a week starting the Spring of the MS-1 year is dedicated to collaborations between students and specialty pathway program directors or designated faculty. These activities may include participating in a continuity clinic, observing on the wards or in the laboratory, observing procedures in the operating or procedural suite, or developing a scholarly project. 

All students work with a scholarly activity mentor in their department to develop a scholarly project before completing their three years of medical school. The student’s interest and program director guidance will determine mentor selection. Mentored projects can include traditional research, clinical research, systemic review, quality, or performance improvement, as well as other systematically evaluated questions. Accelerated Pathway students should identify projects that can be continued as a resident.

During the summer of Phase 1, students will complete an eight-week Specialty Immersion Course at the University of Miami. It includes direct one-on-one development time within their department. In addition, it includes a common course designed to fast-track the medical student’s progression to residency, including clinical reasoning and bedside skills, and advancement of their scholarly project.
