Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences

The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry is dedicated to delivering innovative, compassionate care for children and adolescents and preparing tomorrow’s academic and clinical leaders in the field. We train child and adolescent psychiatrists who diagnose and treat children, adolescents, and young adults with complex psychiatric problems. Our program emphasizes a diverse training environment and multidisciplinary, multimodal treatment for children and their families. Our multicultural patient population and environment offer a rich and broad educational experience.

Our care settings include a 20-bed inpatient unit, a large outpatient clinic, a pediatric consultation-liaison service at Holtz Pediatrics Hospital and an emergency-crisis evaluation service. We work with children and adolescents with a full spectrum of psychiatric disorders. Our team has advanced expertise in general pediatric psychiatry areas such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and mood and anxiety disorders. Additionally, we have several dedicated subspecialty programs, including one for patients with autism spectrum disorder and developmental/intellectual disabilities, a dialectical behavioral therapy program for teens, and a program for patients with tic disorders and related conditions. We collaborate closely with the University of Miami Counseling Center at Coral Gables, which serves as a clinical rotation for child and adolescent psychiatry fellows in their second year.

Division faculty and trainees have an opportunity to participate in national and international multisite clinical research, including a genomics study and clinical trials with novel agents. Faculty work with the Department of Pediatrics colleagues in a state-funded pediatrics behavioral health initiative, which seeks to build pediatricians’ capacity to diagnose, treat, and refer patients with behavioral health conditions. Our efforts increase patients’ access to behavioral health care and improve access to these services.

Our division includes the nationally recognized University of Miami Tourette Association of America (TAA) Center of Excellence — a distinction held by only a few academic centers in the U.S. We offer the highest level of care, conduct groundbreaking research, provide training and education to child psychiatry fellows, and serve as patient and family advocates.

The division’s overarching goal is to provide future child and adolescent psychiatrists with the knowledge, skills, and experience to deliver compassionate, family-centered care to children, adolescents, and their families.
