Holtz Children’s Hospital Pediatric Dialysis Unit

Department of Pediatrics
When kidney function falls below 10% of normal, and an immediate kidney transplant is not available, dialysis must be started as a life-sustaining treatment until a kidney transplant can be performed. Starting dialysis is often difficult for any child and their family to accept, so our goal is to make this transition as safe and manageable as possible.

Through a state-of-the art facility, the unit provides hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis modalities, available for both in-center and at-home treatments.  The unit has eight individual stations, including an isolation station, providing treatments to infants, children and adolescents, up to three shifts per day, six days per week.  One of the largest and most experienced centers in the state, the team aims to provide the level of care necessary to promote growth, development, and quality of life.

Our care team includes:

  • Patient & Family
  • Board-Certified Pediatric Nephrologists
  • Dedicated Pediatric Dialysis Nurses
  • Trained Dialysis Technicians
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker
  • Registered Dietician
  • Clinical Pediatric Psychologists
  • Pediatric Pharmacist
  • Child-Life Therapists
  • In-Center Teacher
  • Coordination with Pediatric and Vascular Surgery, as well as Interventional Radiology

Patients’ multidisciplinary needs are coordinated through monthly care review meetings, held in accordance with national guidelines.  The team is committed to guiding patients and their families through the processes of evaluation and preparation for kidney transplantation.  In preparation for transplant, an additional monthly care coordination meeting to include the interdisciplinary team from the Miami Transplant Institute is held. The care team is also dedicated to the provision of renal replacement and extracorporeal therapies to the acute ill, hospitalized children of Holtz Children’s Hospital.

Our service lines include:

  • Acute Hemodialysis
  • Acute Peritoneal Dialysis
