Head and Neck Surgery Fellowship
The Head and Neck Surgery fellowship blends an educational program with the responsibilities of a senior staff physician. The Head and Neck Fellowship is a one-year program accredited by the American Head and Neck Society focused on head and neck oncologic surgery. Two positions are available.
Fellows will develop expertise in head and neck ablative surgery and reconstruction. High volumes of skull base surgery and microvascular reconstructive surgery are available, and fellows will be well trained in both of these areas. There is also opportunity for sub-specialty focus on either of these areas. A second year for increased sub-specialization or laboratory research is optional. It is expected that, over the course of the fellowship, the fellow will develop the ability to perform microvascular cases independently.
Our goal is to train surgeons who will subsequently take positions at referral centers as tertiary head and neck surgeons. This is a hands-on surgical experience with opportunity to function independently and a high surgical volume.
The American Head and Neck Society utilizes Centralized Matching Program to streamline the fellowship application process. For more information go to American Head and Neck Society

Neurotology Fellowship
The neurotology lateral skull base surgery program at University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital under the direction of Simon I. Angeli, MD, provides advanced education beyond that afforded in the otolaryngology residency in the diagnosis and management of disorders of the temporal bone, lateral skull base, and related anatomical structures. A 24-month educational program ensures that concentrated time is available for the neurotology fellow to develop advanced diagnostic expertise and advanced medical and surgical management skills for the care of diseases and disorders of the petrous apex, infratemporal fossa, internal auditory canals, cranial nerves (e.g., vestibular nerve section and joint neurosurgical-neurotological resection of intradural VIII nerve tumors), and lateral skull base, including the occipital bone, sphenoid bone, and temporal bone.
This advanced education is required so that the neurotology fellow may develop expertise with extradural skull base approaches. The fellow will learn to manage postoperative care of lateral skull base surgery patients. This advanced education is necessary for fellows to gain expertise in the joint collaborative management of patients undergoing lateral skull base surgery. The program will also permit exposure to new research opportunities and time to explore new research ideas.
One applicant is selected each year and spends two years studying with the otologists of the Jackson Memorial Hospital/Jackson Health System in affiliation with the University of Miami. Prior to acceptance into the neurotology fellowship program, the fellow has fulfilled all requirements of an otolaryngology residency program and is eligible to take the written and oral examination offered by the American Board of Otolaryngology at the end of the first year of fellowship training.
The fellow is expected to have mastered the scope of knowledge in Otolaryngology as defined by the American Board of Otolaryngology (ABO). The neurotology fellowship focuses on a new scope of knowledge – as defined by the ABO – and prepares the candidate to sit for an oral examination and to qualify for the certificate in the subspecialty of neurotology as outlined by the ABO.
Our program is accredited by the ACGME. Applicants must be graduates of an ACGME-accredited Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery residency training program. The SF Match takes place in October and will be used to process all applicants who want to start their Neurotology training in July of the following year. Applicants are responsible for ensuring they meet all prerequisites for eligibility prior to registering for the match.
