Current Fellows

Stephanie Romero, M.D.

Stephanie was born and raised in South Florida until high school when she moved to northern VA. She missed the year round warm weather and sunshine though so she made her way back south for college and attended USF in Tampa and eventually continued further south to Miami where she completed medical school at FIU, and finally anesthesia residency at UM/JMH. She is eager to continue her training at UM/JMH for her pediatric anesthesia fellowship.

Outside of medicine she enjoys pilates and other group fitness classes, traveling, trying new restaurants, and boating!

Kristina Ruiz, M.D.

Kristina is a South Florida native, where she was born and raised. She attended Florida International University for her undergraduate degree in biology. She went on to West Virginia University where she received her medical degree. She was eager to return to Miami to pursue her anesthesia residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital for the wide case array and renowned clinical experience. During her residency she discovered her passion for working with children. The ability to serve as an advocate for this vulnerable patient population lead her to pursue a pediatric anesthesia fellowship here at JMH. She is excited to continue her medical education in her hometown where she can further serve her community. During her fellowship she hopes to focus on acute/regional pain management and medical education. Outside of work she enjoys spending time with her dog Bailey, playing pickleball, and spending time with friends and family.

Incoming Fellows

Mariah Gosling, M.D.

Dr. Mariah Gosling was born and raised in the beautiful state of Hawai’i where she attended both undergrad and medical school at the University of Hawai’i. She then went on to attend UM/JHS for residency. Recently, she wrote a children’s book titled, Toby’s Magic Bubbles: An Anesthesia Story, for kids undergoing anesthesia and donated books to children’s hospitals across the country.

On her free time she enjoys traveling, surfing, snowboarding, hiking, and sailing around Biscayne Bay.

Rahil Hali, M.D.

Rahil was born and raised in northern New Jersey. He completed both his undergraduate and master’s degrees at Rutgers University before seeking a change of pace and climate by moving to Florida to attend medical school at Nova Southeastern University. He remained in South Florida for his internship at Memorial West in Pembroke Pines and developed a strong appreciation for the region’s people, culture, and lifestyle. He then returned to New Jersey to complete his anesthesia residency at Saint Joseph’s Regional Medical Center, but was ultimately drawn back to Florida. He has a particular interest in pediatric anesthesia, with a focus on regional pain management, and is excited to continue his training in Miami.

Past Fellows

Heng (Kim) He, M.D.

Dr. Kim He was born in China and emigrated to the United States when she was five years old. She attended The Ohio State University for her undergraduate studies and University of Cincinnati for medical school before deciding to trade midwest winters for sunny, balmy Januaries in Miami where she completed her anesthesiology residency. She has worked on numerous bench research projects, co-authored publications and presented at numerous academic conferences in basic as well as clinical sciences.

While Dr. He initially planned to practice as a general anesthesiologist, after graduating, and with some encouragement from her mentors and friends, she decided to further her training and pursue a fellowship in pediatric anesthesiology. Dr. He is passionate in advocating for patient safety and is excited for the opportunity to work with vulnerable patient populations.

In her free time, she has a myriad of hobbies and enjoys taking on new challenges. She is an avid reader, traveler, and rock climber. You will usually find her out and about looking for the next challenge or great adventure, on an airplane, or out and about with her close friends enjoying the weather in Miami.

Harshvardhan Rajen, M.D.

Dr. Harshvardhan Rajen was born and raised in Montréal, Canada. There, he received an undergraduate degree in Cell and Molecular Biology at Concordia University before pursuing medical school in the Caribbean on the island of St. Kitts. He completed Anesthesiology residency at HCA Florida Kendall Hospital here in Miami, and is excited for the opportunity to complete his Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship at the University of Miami. He is looking forward to finding his niche in pediatric anesthesia care and being an educator for future anesthesiology residents.

Growing up in Canada, Dr. Rajen is fluent in French and after being in Miami for 4 years is learning Spanish. He enjoys cooking and trying new cuisines and restaurants around South Florida. In addition to food, Dr. Rajen enjoys an active lifestyle, taking full advantage of the outdoors and weather of South Florida, including exploring the Everglades, the beaches and the Keys.

Cameron Lambert, DO

Dr. Cameron Lambert was raised in rural Kentucky and completed his undergraduate studies in biology at Eastern Kentucky University before attending medical school at Lincoln Memorial University. Alongside his medical education, he pursued a Master’s in Business Administration, specializing in healthcare management. He chose Miami for his anesthesiology residency due to its renowned clinical experience and expertise in high acuity cases at Ryder Trauma Center, University of Miami, and Jackson Memorial Hospital. Shortly after, he discovered his passion for working with children and addressing their unique medical considerations. He was eager to accept a fellowship position in pediatric anesthesiology at UM/Jackson where he plans to focus on congenital heart defects and pediatric cardiovascular surgery. Beyond medicine, he enjoys Miami's outdoor offerings, engaging in sports, cycling, paddleboarding, and unwinding by the beach.

After completing his fellowship in August 2024, he went on to complete a one year Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology fellowship at Boston Children's Hospital.

Lindsey Jane Laux, DO

Dr. Lindsey Laux is a Florida native, born and raised in Tallahassee, FL. She attended Florida State University for both her undergraduate degree and medical school before coming to Miami for residency at UM/Jackson Memorial Hospital. Now calling Miami home, she is excited to continue her fellowship in pediatric anesthesia at UM/Jackson and Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. At work, she finds a special interest in peer mentoring and educational efforts.

Outside of work, Dr. Laux hangs out with her 10-year-old chocolate lab called Bear, who goes everywhere with her, except possibly hot yoga. She likes to cook and bake cakes. If Dr. Laux doesn’t feel like cooking, you might find her at Byblos in South Beach, eating authentic southern food at Blue Collar, or in line at El Bagel right before they open for breakfast on the weekend.

After completing her fellowship in August 2024, she went on to join a private practice in South Florida.

Michael Armstrong, M.D.

Karen Jackson, M.D.

I am from Atlanta, Georgia. Prior to medical school, I studied biology and played volleyball for the Middle Tennessee State University Blue Raiders. After undergrad, I chose to attend the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia which allowed me to serve the underserved communities of Atlanta while training at the renowned Grady Hospital. After my time at Grady, I was confident that Jackson Memorial was exactly what my career needed. At Jackson Memorial, we often practice medicine through uncommon encounters that come with the diversity of our patients from the U.S., the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. This type of one-of-a-kind experience is invaluable. I am confident that through the unique challenges of medical practice we see at Jackson, I am advanced beyond where I might be in other programs at this point in my career. Beyond what the residency program has to offer, South Florida is great. When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my husband, toddler son, and our two dogs and, soon, we will have a newborn daughter joining us! We enjoy the local restaurant scene near our Fort Lauderdale home and love knowing the beach is always a short drive away. Practicing medicine in South Florida is truly unique!

Carmen D. Manresa, M.D
I was born in Havana, Cuba and lived there until the age of 7 when my mother and I were fortunate to immigrate to the United States. Since arriving to the US, Miami has always been my home. It’s a culturally rich and diverse city with so much to offer. Whether your interests are laying on a sunny beach (something that can be enjoyed year round), enjoying authentic Cuban food and coffee, cycling or running along ocean views, catching a Miami Heat game, or enjoying some local art around Wynwood Walls, there’s always something to do in Miami. I attended University of Miami for medical school and stayed to complete both my Anesthesiology residency and Pediatric Anesthesia fellowship at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Jackson Memorial Hospital has some of the best training to offer with diverse patient population and a wide breadth of cases, but our training is not limited to Jackson only. As fellows we rotate through several institutions including Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, and St. Jude Research Hospital. Our Pediatric Anesthesia department fosters a supportive environment with a mission of lifelong learning and I consider myself lucky to be a part of it. My career goals are to grow continuously to provide the best care possible to my patients and my interests include pediatric regional anesthesia, optimization of systems based practice, and patient safety and quality improvement projects.

Ana Mavarez, M.D.

I was born and raised in Venezuela. Both of my parents are doctors and taught me the beauty of medicine since I was a little child. I had the fortune to graduate with honors from medical school and then worked during 2 years in undeserved and impoverished areas in Venezuela. I moved abroad to Miami, Florida, where I soon began working on clinical and basic science research at the University of Miami. During research, I worked with Dr. Candiotti evaluating the epigenetic mechanisms of pain and nicotine in animal models as well as participating in several clinical trials studying postoperative pain management and PONV. I completed my anesthesia residency training at University of Miami / Jackson Memorial Hospital and I wanted to stay for Pediatric Anesthesia Fellowship. This program offers a high volume of complex pediatric cases and manages an extensive variety of surgical pathologies. The experience we get as Pediatric Anesthesia fellows is very diverse, going from: pediatric eye surgery cases to complex multi-organ transplantation surgeries. My main goal is to provide the best anesthesia care to this kids and learn the most from this amazing experience. As fellows, we also rotate through several main pavilions and health systems such as: Holtz, Nicklaus, Saint Jude Children’s Hospitals and Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, besides a mission trip to Haiti; offering us a truly-full pediatric anesthesia clinical experience. This clinical exposure, combined with amazing meaningful research opportunities, excellent mentorship and camaraderie makes this institution a fantastic place to train. I can proudly say that I am part of a new loving family called the pediatric anesthesia team. I am sure that after finishing my fellowship, I will be capable to provide excellent anesthesia care for my pediatric patients. Despite a busy work schedule, I enjoy my time off work with my husband, family and friends. This wonderful city has a lot to offer, from a great Cuban coffee in calle ocho to an artsy day at Wynnwod, a fancy restaurant in Brickell or a sunny day in Miami Beach.
