Frontotemporal Dementia Research (FTD)

Approximately 5% of all dementia patients present with Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD), including ~10-20% of those dementia patients before the age of 65 years. Though FTD is unique in its loss of social cognition or language disturbances, it shows overlap with other diseases, such as Alzheimer Disease (AD).

Information on genetic factors contributing to disease can help in diagnosis, prognosis and eventually development of treatments. The vast majority of genetic research in FTD so far has been done in non-Hispanic white patients. As for Alzheimer disease, genes driving the disease risk for FTD may differ between different population groups. Furthermore, several therapy clinical trials currently ongoing for FTD are based on genetic findings in the disease identified in European populations only.

We are looking to enroll individuals who identify as Hispanic, African (American), Native American or Asian (American) and who have a diagnosis of either behavioral FTD or language variant FTD/primary progressive aphasia. Additionally, we are looking to enroll individuals who have a diagnosis of either FTD forms AND have other family members with any dementia diagnosis.
