In our comprehensive two-year fellowship program, you will receive a broad range of hands-on clinical experience that encompasses both inpatient and outpatient care.
In the inpatient setting, you'll lead and coordinate activities across three primary rotations: Jackson Memorial Hospital, University of Miami Hospital and Clinics, and the Miami Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Your responsibilities will include evaluating and managing inpatient consultations, developing differential diagnoses, formulating treatment plans, and collaborating closely with referring physicians to ensure seamless patient care. This hands-on experience is designed to refine your clinical skills and deepen your understanding of rheumatic diseases. Throughout their fellowship, fellows maintain two continuity clinics at: one at the JMH ACC Estate clinic and one at the Miami VA Medical Center. The fellows follow their own panel of patients and are responsible for all aspects of the patients’ care with support and guidance from teaching attending physicians. The fellows also participate in the care of patients through the University of Miami Hospital and clinic (UMHC) and through additional opportunities for co-practice with different faculty members. Our program also places a strong emphasis on research, dedicating approximately one-third of the fellowship to investigative pursuits. You'll have the opportunity to design and implement original research projects under the mentorship of our experienced faculty, focusing on areas such as the immunology of connective tissue diseases, autoantibodies, and clinical aspects of systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis. This research rotation aims to equip you with robust methodological skills, enabling you to contribute meaningfully to advancements in the field of rheumatology. It is expected by our fellows to prepare their research and submit it for presentation in our local and/or national meetings and publication. Our fellows have various opportunities for teaching as we have residents, medical students and observers that rotate with us in the consult and outpatient services as well opportunities to engage in a more formal education with different multidisciplinary conferences.
