Training the Physician-Leaders of Tomorrow

A new era in health care calls for aspiring physicians with the skills to not just meet but lead the transformation of patient care. Patients need leaders who will shape the future of medicine, champion discovery, and direct health systems to provide the best medical interventions to save lives and build healthier communities.

Our future physician-leaders need curricular versatility and interactive forms of learning, facilitated by a dynamic, interconnected, and flexible spaceā€”a new state-of-the-art facility, the Miller Center for Medical Education.

A Center of Excellence in Medical Education

The Miller Center for Medical Education will be the hub for leading-edge medical education, where theory meets practice through experiential learning, community engagement, and peer-to-peer global collaborations. This high-tech facility, integrated into community life, will serve as a focal point for health education and innovation in training environments across a variety of spaces.

Medical learners will achieve their potential within customized environments that leverage function and aesthetics to optimize study, collaboration, and innovation. Flexible small group spaces will replace auditorium- style lecture halls to spark active participation and collaboration.

Technology Integration to Advance Education

The Miller Center for Medical Education will leverage cutting-edge technology, such as XR, or extended reality, offering a wide range of revolutionary learning experiences. Advanced technology integration will foster the ability to study remotely, chart from different locations, and collaborate through worldwide partnerships. Simulation and augmented reality technology will deliver early virtual learning and “flipped classrooms” that reverse the traditional model, focusing class time on highly customized student understanding, peer interaction, and real-life scenarios, rather than lecture.

A Center Built for NextGenMD

The Miller Center for Medical Education will amplify NextGenMD, the Miller School’s dynamic new curriculum. This curriculum is preparing our future physicians to excel as caregivers and respond to health care issues anywhere in the world, with a deeper understanding of the social and environmental determinants of health. Learners are being motivated to develop critical reasoning skills for active learning situations and they are interacting with patients from the start of their studies. The Center will support this level of engagement and hands-on application of new learning, through design and technology integration.
