The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s pediatric bone marrow/hematopoietic stem cell transplantation program provides transplants for infants, children and adolescents with cancer, bone marrow failure, blood diseases, and congenital immune deficiencies. Our program is the only university-based pediatric transplant program in South Florida and is Foundation for the Accreditation for Cellular Therapy (FACT)-accredited. As an academic institution, we offer transplant patients access to clinical trials involving bone marrow transplant through the Blood and Marrow Transplant Clinical Trials Network (BMT CTN) and the Children’s Oncology Group (COG).
The bone marrow transplant program is led by highly trained and specialized pediatric bone marrow transplant physicians Edward Ziga, MD and Julio Barredo, MD. Under their direction, nurse practitioners, coordinators, and nurse specialists are able to provide a transplant for any condition that requires this treatment. Patients are referred to us from South Florida, Latin America and the Caribbean.
Allogeneic-related donor transplants or haploidentical donor transplants are available as treatment options. When no family donor is available, patients are treated with unrelated donor or umbilical cord blood transplants and, as part of the National Marrow Donor Program, our patients have access to a diverse donor population.
