Our Program
The University of Miami/Dr. John T. Macdonald Foundation School Health Initiative (SHI) was founded in the year 2000 with the mission to integrate healthcare and education for children and adolescents experiencing barriers to receiving adequate medical care. The Department of Pediatrics joined the program in 2016 and currently serves approximately 10,000 students annually, spanning nine public schools in Miami-Dade County.
The School Health Initiative operates in 9 public schools (3 high schools, 2 middle schools, and 4 elementary schools) throughout Miami-Dade County. Clinic locations are predominantly in the North Miami and North Miami Beach areas, with one high school in the Historic Overtown District.
The School Health Initiative is a member of Health Connect in our Schools, through collaborations with The Children’s Trust, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, and the Miami-Dade County Health Department.
