Message from the Chair

Anesthesiology, Perioperative Medicine and Pain Management
Dr Candiotti

Welcome to the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative Medicine and Pain Management at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine. It is my honor to lead one of the finest departments of anesthesiology anywhere. This pride is compounded by the fact that I graduated from the Miller School and completed my residencies in Internal Medicine and Anesthesiology at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Our mission is to serve our patient population to the best of our ability with integrity and empathy.

The department was founded in 1958 by Dr. Gerard Converse and has grown to be one of the world's largest and best anesthesiology training programs, currently comprised of 26 interns, 85 residents, and 17 fellows. The 100+ faculty charged with making the department run well are among the most skilled and diverse groups of anesthesiologists anywhere in the world.

The department covers virtually every aspect of the practice of anesthesiology. We have fellowships in Cardiovascular/Thoracic, Regional/Acute Pain, Chronic Pain, Pediatrics, Solid Organ Transplant, Neurosurgery, and Critical Care. Our team excels in many practice areas with a notable emphasis on Solid Organ Transplant, Neurosurgery, Trauma, Ophthalmology, and Cardiac Surgery. The department is responsible for providing care at numerous hospitals and ambulatory centers across the University of Miami and Jackson Health Care systems.

In addition to our outstanding clinical care, we also perform well in academics. We rank #27 in U.S. Anesthesiology training programs in NIH funding. Despite the COVID pandemic, we have maintained our academic output, publishing 50+ peer-reviewed articles last year. The faculty plays a critical role in both state and national anesthesiology societies. Six of the faculty in our department are ABA board examiners.

The department is also the home of the University of Miami, Jackson Memorial Hospital Center for Patient Safety (CPS). The CPS is an exceptional facility dedicated to training health care providers at all levels. Its goal is to teach the skills necessary to prevent errors and improve overall patient care and patient safety. Having such a facility integrated into the department affords us the ability to provide world-class training to our students and access to an outstanding MOCA facility for our attendings.

The team is set to grow and expand in the coming years. New facilities are scheduled to open soon, and we are constantly recruiting and bringing in new talented physicians and CRNAs. Our future involves growing in virtually every area of our practice, including advancing in teaching and various areas of research.

Please enjoy our new website and feel free to contact us for any additional information or if you have questions.

Sincerely,

Dr. Keith A. Candiotti, M.D., FASA
