Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology (MOCA)

Center for Patient Safety

Accreditation

The University of Miami – Jackson Memorial Hospital Center for Patient Safety is an endorsed simulation center by the American Society of Anesthesiologists and a member of their Simulation Education Network. The one day course fulfills Part IV requirement of the American Board of Anesthesiologists (ABA) Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology (MOCA) Program.

Course description

Course participants will actively manage realistic simulation scenarios that demonstrate clinical and technical skills as well as teamwork and communication. The participant to instructor ratio will not exceed 4 to 1 in order to provide a quality learning environment. Those participants without prior simulation experience will receive a thorough introduction to the simulators, facility and equipment before beginning any scenarios. After a customized orientation, the participants will have an opportunity to manage critical perioperative events in a simulated clinical environment. Each participant is guaranteed to play the primary role in at least one scenario. Each scenario will be immediately followed by a video-aided debriefing that will include review of the relevant clinical and technical actions as well as the examples of team dynamics and communication skills. All recordings are for the benefit of the participant and will not be released from the Center.

The ABA and the ASA created a video to explain the requirements, the rationale, and the benefits of a MOCA simulation course: http://www.theaba.org/simvid.htm
