USOAR (U Summer of Advanced Research)

The U Summer of Advanced Research (USOAR) program is a competitive summer research opportunity for first-year medical students at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. The program supports students interested in biomedical research, translational science, clinical investigation, and physician-scientist career pathways.

USOAR encourages students to engage in high-quality, mentor-guided summer research projects that advance scientific discovery and improve patient care. Students work closely with faculty investigators while gaining hands-on experience in laboratory research, clinical research, translational medicine, and scholarly activities.

Participants receive a $4,000 stipend through their financial aid package to support an intensive eight-week, full-time summer research experience (more than 30 hours per week). The program is open to all first-year NextGenMD students, except students enrolled in the M.D./Ph.D. program.

To apply, students must identify a faculty mentor and research project before submitting their application. Applicants should include details about their mentor, research project, and a one-page research proposal describing the goals, methods, and significance of the proposed work.

At the conclusion of the program, participants submit a progress report and present their findings during a research poster symposium. This experience provides valuable opportunities to strengthen scientific communication skills, share discoveries with peers and faculty, and expand professional research networks.

The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine is committed to fostering the next generation of physician-scientists and clinical researchers through programs that promote research training, mentorship, innovation, and scholarly achievement.
