Office of AI in Medical Education

Advancing the Future of Medicine Through Artificial Intelligence
The Office of AI in Medical Education at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine aims to responsibly integrate artificial intelligence (AI) across the medical education continuum, elevating learning, assessment, operations, and scholarship so that every learner and educator can leverage AI to improve learning outcomes, advance educational and health equity, and accelerate discovery.

Vision

We are creating a precision medical education ecosystem where evidence, analytics, and AI-enabled tools personalize learning; where assessment is trustworthy and competency based; and where faculty, trainees, and staff are confident, ethical AI users; driving value for learners, and ultimately patients and communities.

Guiding Principles

The Office of AI in Medical Education partners with multidisciplinary faculty to foster excellence in curriculum integration, precision education, research, and innovation within medical education. Our efforts are grounded in the following core principles:
  • Safety, Equity, & Accountability: We emphasize unbiased approaches to learning and assessment, require transparency in all AI tools and models, and maintain thorough documentation throughout the development process.

  • Academic Integrity & Professionalism: We ensure all activities comply with the Miller School’s AI policies, with clear expectations for disclosure and ethical conduct.

  • Pedagogy: We implement evidence-based strategies rooted in educational theory and evaluate the impact of each new AI project or tool; focusing on continuous quality improvement.

  • Data Stewardship: We strictly observe FERPA, HIPAA, and IRB requirements, prioritize institutionally approved and compliant AI tools, and incorporate privacy by design in all data practices.

  • Human in and on the Loop: Subject matter experts are actively involved in evaluating the accuracy, effectiveness, and equity of AI models and tools to ensure responsible integration and continuous improvement.
