Our lab studies the safety of medications used to treat autoimmune rheumatic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and systemic sclerosis (SSc). We investigate the risks and benefits of these medications and how they affect different populations, such as individuals with varied genotypes and environmental exposures.
Additionally, our lab conducts clinical research focused on understanding environmental risk factors and adverse health outcomes such as cardiovascular and renal complications among people with rheumatic conditions. Furthermore, our lab is exploring novel artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning methods to improve the detection and treatment of rheumatic conditions.
Our team is led by Dr. Cecilia Chung, a physician-scientist with expertise in rheumatology, clinical pharmacology, and pharmacoepidemiology. Her research has been funded by multiple grants and awards from the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), the National Institute for General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Our team is comprised of scientists, statisticians, physician trainees, and students with expertise and interests spanning public health, biostatistics, machine learning, rheumatology, immunology, and related disciplines.
