Research Focus

The Satoh Lab investigates the cellular and molecular mechanisms that drive severe inflammatory skin diseases. We study how immune, stromal, and epithelial cells interact within human skin to initiate, amplify, and sustain inflammation. Our research begins with patient-derived tissues and integrates single-cell and spatial omics, multiplex tissue imaging, and computational approaches to identify disease-associated cell states, cellular niches, and molecular pathways. We use these discoveries to generate mechanistic hypotheses about how specific cells, pathways, and intercellular interactions contribute to disease. We then test these hypotheses experimentally using cell-based models, gene perturbation, and molecular assays to establish functional and causal relationships. By connecting observations in human disease with mechanistic experiments, we aim to identify fundamental disease mechanisms and new therapeutic opportunities. Ultimately, our goal is to bring these discoveries back to patients with severe inflammatory skin diseases.
