Neuroscience

Office of the Executive Dean for Research
Neuroscience research explores the complexities of the nervous system, from neural development to neurodegenerative diseases. Our research aims to advance knowledge and develop innovative treatments for neurological conditions.

Neuroscience research emphases include:

  • Using the in-house platform ID Trax to pinpoint multiple targets for drug discovery, including therapies for spinal cord injuries, cancer and diabetes/kidney disease.
  • “Cell painting” - the use of fluorescent dyes to analyze parts of a cell – to develop therapies related to lipids for a variety of diseases.
  • Working to reduce APOE4 in carriers to reduce Alzheimer’s disease risk.
  • Developing cognitive challenges in relation to imaging, plasma biomarkers and neurodegeneration in Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias
  • Gene therapy for mitochondrial disorders
  • Targeted neuromodulation including vagus nerve stimulation to treat depression, stroke, tinnitus, spinal cord injury and more
  • Using deep learning computer technology to decode spontaneous thoughts and develop therapies for mental disorders that involve negative rumination
  • Studying taste chemosensory circuits to define their involvement in physiological functions and behaviors, including salivation, perception of likes or dislikes, appetite and satiety
  • Working with fibrotic scars to regenerate axons after spinal cord injury
  • Analyzing the ecological drivers of emotion
