South Florida has one of the most diverse and rapidly aging populations in the country. To address the needs of our community’s seniors and their families, the Miller School has developed programs and collaborative team science approaches to prevent, diagnose, and treat age-related disorders.
Miller School researchers from a variety of specialties are investigating the causes of medical issues as people get older, including:
- The cellular mechanisms of aging, including an exploration of anti-aging therapies, DNA repair, the aging epigenome, metabolism and antibody response in the elderly and the inflammasome’s impact on aging.
- Frailty, including falls risks, mobility, and physical activity, aging and cognition, and resistance training to reduce functional decline.
- Sensory process and aging, including auditory, vestibular and other sensory systems, and vision and the aging retina.
- Drug discovery for Alzheimer’s disease and other aging-related diseases.
- HIV and aging.
