Biography
Winston Lee, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, where he directs the Translational Ocular Genomics Laboratory. He also serves as Co-Director of the Inherited Retinal Disease Research Fellowship Program and as an investigator on clinical trials for Stargardt disease and retinitis pigmentosa. His research is supported by the National Institutes of Health Pathway to Independence Award (K99/R00 EY036930), the Stanley J. Glaser Foundation Research Award, and the Research to Prevent Blindness/Tom Wertheimer Career Development Award in Data Science. He serves on the Editorial Board of Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science and on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Cure4/6 Foundation.?? -

Teaching Interests
My teaching interests center on individualized mentorship of graduate and medical students, residents and fellows. I aim to help trainees develop disciplined scientific reasoning, rigorous problem-solving skills and the confidence to become independent investigators. I emphasize understanding research questions at a fundamental biological level while maintaining a clear view of their translational relevance to medicine.?? -
Research Interests
My research program integrates genomic sequencing, molecular biology, deep clinical phenotyping, quantitative retinal imaging and computational methods to advance precision medicine for inherited retinal diseases (IRDs). A central goal of the laboratory is to resolve genetically undiagnosed cases and elucidate the mechanism of novel disease genes. We are also interested in the more nuanced genetic architecture of IRDs, including hypomorphic alleles, deep-intronic and other cryptic variants, complex inheritance and genetic modifiers that influence penetrance, phenotypic heterogeneity and clinical severity.
