Biography
WayWay M. Hlaing, MBBS, MS, PhD, FACE, is a professor and director of the epidemiology doctoral program in the Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
Dr. Hlaing earned degrees in medicine and health sciences, including a bachelor of medicine, bachelor of surgery (MBBS), a master’s degree in health sciences, and a doctorate in epidemiology. Before joining the University of Miami in 2010, she was a tenured associate professor of epidemiology at Florida International University.
Her research focuses on cardiovascular disease epidemiology and the intersection of chronic conditions and health disparities. She has served as an investigator and methodologist on numerous federal and foundation-funded studies involving cardiovascular disease, obesity, HIV, and substance use. Her additional scholarship includes research on doctoral and postdoctoral training, including competencies and ethics in epidemiology.
Dr. Hlaing has more than two decades of experience teaching introductory and advanced epidemiology courses in online, in-person, and hybrid formats. She mentors undergraduate and graduate students and emphasizes participatory learning approaches that incorporate diverse professional perspectives.
She has received multiple honors for teaching and mentorship, including recognition as an outstanding faculty advisor and recipients of teaching awards at Florida International University and the University of Miami. At the University of Miami, she received the Outstanding Graduate Program Director Award and multiple awards from the Delta Omega Honorary Society in Public Health.
Dr. Hlaing is a member of several professional organizations, including the Society for Epidemiologic Research, the International Epidemiologic Association, and the American College of Epidemiology. She is an elected fellow of the American College of Epidemiology and a member of the University of Miami Academy of Medical Educators. She has served on national committees, including the National Board of Public Health Examiners, and has contributed to the development of Certified in Public Health examination materials. She has also held leadership roles within professional organizations, including service on ethics committees and program leadership groups in public health education. -

Teaching Interests
Her teaching focuses on both introductory and advanced epidemiology. She is particularly interested in applying epidemiologic study designs and methods from theory to practice and emphasizes the importance of critically appraising epidemiologic studies to evaluate the strength and totality of evidence. -
Research Interests
The goal is to utilize the portability of epidemiologic methods to conduct scientifically sound and ethically optimized studies that have public health or clinical implications or both.
General interest is in the intersection of chronic disease epidemiology and health disparities. -
