Biography
Dr. Varan Govind is a tenured Professor in the Department of Radiology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. An internationally recognized expert in advanced magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), diffusion imaging, and multimodal neuroimaging, Dr. Govind has built a distinguished career advancing imaging biomarkers for neurological disease, neurotrauma, and infectious disease.
Dr. Govind earned his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, following his master’s and bachelor’s degrees in physics from the University of Madras. He began his research career at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi before moving to the University of California, San Francisco, where he spent five years as a postgraduate researcher and assistant specialist in radiology. In 2002, he joined the University of Miami, rising through the academic ranks from Research Assistant Professor to tenured Professor in 2020.
Over the past three decades, Dr. Govind has authored or co-authored more than 150 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and invited reviews. His scholarship has appeared in leading journals including Journal of Neurotrauma, Journal of Neuroimaging, Neuroradiology Journal, Frontiers in Neuroscience, and NMR in Biomedicine. His contributions to seminal reference works, such as the Handbook of Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy In Vivo and Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy of Degenerative Brain Diseases, reflect his international reputation in the field.
His research program emphasizes the development and application of whole-brain MR spectroscopic imaging, diffusion tensor and kurtosis imaging, and multimodal MRI techniques. Dr. Govind’s work has yielded important insights into the structural and biochemical changes underlying amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer’s disease, HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders, and pediatric brain development after prenatal exposures. More recently, he has played a central role in collaborative investigations of HIV, substance use, and neuroinflammation, including multi-institutional projects funded by the NIH and international consortia.
Dr. Govind has served as principal investigator and co-investigator on numerous federally funded grants, including projects supported by the NIH, NIDA, and the Miami Center for AIDS Research. His work has advanced translational applications of neuroimaging to improve diagnosis, monitor treatment, and guide interventions for vulnerable patient populations.
In addition to his research, Dr. Govind is a dedicated educator and mentor. He has supervised graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty, many of whom have gone on to establish successful research careers. He is also an active reviewer for leading journals in radiology, neuroscience, and biomedical imaging, and he regularly presents his work at international conferences such as ISMRM, ASNR, and the Research Society on Alcohol.
Through his career-long dedication to advancing imaging science, Dr. Govind has made enduring contributions to radiology, neuroscience, and translational medicine. His research continues to shape the field of neuroimaging and to strengthen the University of Miami’s position as a leader in radiologic innovation and discovery. -
