Biography
Dr. Vanessa Hui is an Associate Professor of Clinical Surgery in the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. She earned dual undergraduate degrees in Molecular and Cell Biology and Chinese Language from the University of California, Berkeley, and received her medical degree from the University of Vermont. Dr. Hui completed her general surgery residency at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine, during which she undertook a two-year clinical research fellowship in colorectal surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. She completed her colorectal surgery fellowship at Cleveland Clinic Florida in Weston.
Dr. Hui is board certified in both general surgery and colon and rectal surgery. She is an active member of the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, the Association of Women Surgeons, and the Association for Surgical Education. Her academic work includes authorship and co-authorship of multiple textbook chapters, review articles, and peer-reviewed publications.
With a strong interest in surgical education, Dr. Hui serves as the Surgical Clerkship Director for the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. She was named Outstanding Junior Attending of the Year by the Department of Surgery for the 2021–2022 academic year and was recently inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society in recognition of her commitment to professionalism, leadership, scholarship, and service.
Her clinical interests include minimally invasive colorectal surgery, colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, fecal incontinence, and hereditary colorectal syndromes. In addition to English, Dr. Hui is fluent in Cantonese and conversational in Mandarin. -

Teaching Interests
What I find most rewarding is helping students improve through their clinical journey, whether it be improving their examination technique, understanding surgical pathophysiologies or improving their oral presentation skills. Seeing that aha moment inspires me to continue my own learning journey. -
Research Interests
Interests include clinical outcomes for malignant and benign entities within colorectal surgery, colonoscopies, hereditary colorectal cancer syndromes, anal fistulae in the setting of inflammatory bowel disease, surgical techniques, among others. -
