Biography
Dr. Unoma Akamagwuna is a pediatric rehabilitation physician and academic clinician-educator whose expertise spans pediatric rehabilitation across the lifespan. She serves as the Shriners Endowed Chief of Pediatric Rehabilitation for UHealth Jackson Children’s, leading the pediatric rehabilitation program at Christine E. Lynn Rehabilitation Center for the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis at UHealth/Jackson Memorial and Holtz Children’s Hospital. She is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine, Pediatrics, and Brain Injury Medicine. Dr. Akamagwuna completed a combined Pediatrics and PM&R residency at Children’s Hospital of Colorado and earned her medical degree from George Washington University School of Medicine, with undergraduate training at Xavier University of Louisiana.
Dr. Akamagwuna's clinical expertise centers on the care of children with brain injuries, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, spinal cord injuries and other neurodevelopmental disorders. She is particularly invested in the transition of care for young adults with pediatric-onset neurodevelopmental disabilities. Her prior leadership experience includes serving as Director of the Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine Fellowship Program, Director of the Spina Bifida Clinic, and Assistant Director of Quality Improvement. A trained VitalTalk faculty member, she has been actively engaged in training physicians and trainees to navigate complex and difficult clinical conversations. Her scholarly work focuses on disability-competent care, spina bifida, cardiac rehabilitation, quality improvement, health equity, and narrative medicine.
Dr. Akamagwuna is nationally active and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine. She is an active national and international speaker on pediatric rehabilitation, narrative medicine, professional identity formation, and bias in healthcare, and has been recognized for excellence in teaching, mentorship, and educational leadership. Dr. Akamagwuna is committed to advancing equitable, humanistic, and developmentally informed care for children and adults with disabilities. -
