Biography
Dr. Thomas Harrington an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine/ Division of Hematology. He is director of the Adult Sickle Cell program as well as the director of the adult program for the University of Miami Hemophilia Treatment Center.
He graduated from Boston College with a bachelor's degree in philosophy and University of Miami School of Medicine. He completed his internal medicine residency and hematology fellowship at UM/Jackson Memorial and Medical Oncology at the University of Minnesota.
His interest in Sickle Cell began during his fellowship under the mentorship of Dr. Don Temple, and he took over the Jackson Sickle Cell clinic in 1996. He was also fortunate to work closely with Dr. Charles Pegelow, a leader in sickle cell research at Miami until his death in 2003.
His main clinical activities are at Jackson Memorial Hospital where he serves as primary attending on the Hematology Consult service. He also maintains Sickle Cell and Hemophilia sub-specialty clinics at Jackson, and a weekly clinic at the University of Miami. He works closely with pediatric colleagues and both Sickle Cell and Hemophilia focusing on transition to adult care. He been principal and co-investigator in numerous research studies, including gene therapy in Hemophilia A. The adult sickle cell program is part of a national sickle cell network through the American Society of Hematology. -
