Thomas E. Johnson is a Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, serves as Service Chief for the Division of Oculoplastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and directs an ASOPRS fellowship. He performed fellowships in Ophthalmic Pathology with Dr. William Spencer, California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco, Oculoplastic Surgery with Drs. Robert Weatherhead and Amin Nasr at the King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and Oculoplastic and Reconstructive Surgery with Dr. David Tse at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. Dr. Johnson has a passion for international ophthalmology, having worked in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia 6 years at the King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital. Additionally, he has volunteered on ORBIS International, the “Flying Eye Hospital” 15 times, performing both on and off-the-plane programs, with a special emphasis on Africa. He has also volunteered in Haiti, notably helping to establish a field hospital in Port-au-Prince after the 2011 earthquake.
Thomas has given national and international presentations, published multiple peer-reviewed articles, and edited two books on Oculoplastic Surgery topics, one of which is titled Anophthalmia: The Expert’s guide to Medical and Surgical Management. He is an avid teacher, spending his Fridays staffing the ophthalmology residents in their oculoplastic clinics and surgeries. He credits his enjoyment of oculoplastic surgery and his successes to his outstanding colleagues at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, the excellent staff at ORBIS International, his mentors Drs. Spencer, Weatherhead, Nasr, and Tse, and his loving family including his wonderful daughter Olivia.
