Biography
Dr. Teshamae Monteith is a professor of clinical neurology, chief of the Headache Division, and fellowship director for headache medicine at the University of Miami Health System. She earned her bachelor’s degree in biology through the Honors Program at Florida International University before attending medical school at the University of Miami, where she graduated in 2004. During her training, she developed a deep appreciation for the brain and a commitment to advancing clinical care to reduce suffering. She completed her neurology residency at the New York University School of Medicine, followed by a fellowship at the Thomas Jefferson University Jefferson Headache Center, where she developed a comprehensive approach to headache management. She then pursued a second fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco, focusing on research in migraine and other headache disorders.
Dr. Monteith is actively involved in education, research, and leadership in headache medicine. She serves on the Board of Directors and co-chairs the editorial board of the American Migraine Foundation. She has played key roles within the International Headache Society (IHS), including as co-chair of the Membership Committee (2024–present) and as a former member of the Board of Trustees (2021–2023). She has also contributed to IHS task forces, including the Migraine Practice Guidelines and Regional Committee Task Force. Passionate about mentorship, she founded the New Investigator and Trainee Section of the American Headache Society (AHS) to support the next generation of specialists. She was the headache topic chair from 2021-2024 for the AAN.
Her contributions to the field have been recognized with several awards, including the AHS Women’s Health Science Award. She is also a co-recipient of the American Academy of Neurology’s (AAN) Palatucci Advocate of the Year Award and has received the Torch Award from Florida International University. Dr. Monteith is a fellow of both the AHS and the AAN and has served as co-chair of the AHS Leadership Committee and as president of the Florida Society of Neurology. In 2022, Dr. Monteith was featured in Lancet Neurology’s Lifeline.
Beyond clinical practice and leadership, Dr. Monteith is actively engaged in medical editorial work and education, especially through digital platforms. She is on the editorial board for Neurology, acts as a senior host for the Neurology Podcast, and is a deputy editor for Neurology Minute. She also serves as associate editor for the Continuum Audio podcast and the journal Cephalalgia. She has been a guest editor for the New England Journal of Medicine Group and, in 2025, became the deputy editor for NEJM Journal Watch Neurology. -
