Biography
Dr. del Moral earned her MD. (1984) and PhD (1988) degrees from the University of Granada in Spain. After doing her Pediatric Residency training in the Hospital Clinico in Granada, she came to the USA to do basic research at the University of Miami and subsequently stayed for General Pediatric and Neonatal-Perinatal training.
Upon completion of sub-specialty training she remained at UM as Assistant Professor, becoming Associate Professor in 2007 and Professor in 2020. She is currently Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Neonatology at the UM Miller School of Medicine, with full-time academic and clinical responsibilities.
As a physician-clinical investigator she is particularly interested in nutrition and gastrointestinal diseases of premature infants, with the long-term goal of developing novel therapies to promote intestinal mucosa maturation to prevent gastrointestinal dysfunction and disease. Throughout her research career, she has been involved in clinical trials focused on the nutritional aspects of care in premature infants.
She has contributed to several single-center and large-scale, multi-center clinical trials involving manipulation of the neonatal microbiota. Her current research focuses on exploring the role of microbiome dysbiosis and its association with complications of prematurity. She is the site PI for the Connection Study, an FDA-regulated, multi-center randomized controlled trial to study probiotic use in the prevention of necrotizing enterocolitis.
For the past 20 years, in addition to being an academic neonatologist, she has been a medical educator, mentoring several fellows, residents and undergraduate students in both clinical medicine and research. Her educational activities are focused on neonatal resuscitation.
She expanded her educational role organizing neonatal resuscitation workshops, as a part of the international Miami Neonatology Conference and also outside of USA, collaborating with the Colombian Society of Neonatology (ASCON) and the National Health Service in Dominican Republic, For the pass 3 year she has served on the American Academy of Pediatrics Neonatal Resuscitation Program Steering Committee. -
