Biography
Stephen Symes, M.D., F.A.C.P., is an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the Miller School of Medicine. He completed his medical education at Howard University in 1989 and Internal Medicine residency at Jackson Memorial Medical Center in 1992. With main clinical activities in HIV and AIDS, Dr. Symes developed pathways to train future physician leaders in global and domestic health program administration and advocacy. Dr. Symes has served in institutional UME and GME leadership. As Associate Dean, he founded what is currently named the Office of Community Engagement at Miller – emphasizing workforce development. With medical students at Miller, he started the Human Rights clinic for asylum seekers who are victims of torture and abuse. Dr. Symes also served as primary care clinician in T.H.R.I.V.E., a UM-JMH clinic for victims of human trafficking in South Florida. Dr. Symes is the Medical Director at the community-based Center for Haitian Studies, providing free care to uninsured patients in the North Miami community. He continues to be actively involved in medical education, serving as a supervisor for pipeline programs for aspiring pre-med applicants, faculty mentor for MD-MPH students, faculty advisor for SNMA, executive member of the Admissions Committee, and with CHS, directing clinical clerkships for students from several Caribbean medical schools at JMH and community-based sites. -
