Biography
SPENCER ETH, M.D.

Dr. Spencer Eth serves as the Chief of Mental Health at the Miami VA Healthcare System and as Professor and Director of the Forensic Psychiatry and Interim Director of the Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship Programs at the University of Miami. From 1996 to 2010 Dr. Eth was Senior Vice President for Behavioral Health at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Manhattan, and Professor and Vice Chairman of Psychiatry at New York Medical College. Earlier in his career Dr. Eth was affiliated with the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center and UCLA, and with the Los Angeles County-University of Southern California Medical Center. Dr. Eth also spent a semester as a Lady Davis Visiting Professor of Psychiatry at Hadassah University Hospital in Jerusalem, Israel.
Dr. Eth received his BA from New York University and his MD from UCLA, and he was in graduate school at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. Dr. Eth trained in psychiatry at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center and in child psychiatry at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in psychiatry and also in child and adolescent psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, and forensic psychiatry.
Dr. Eth is the author or co-author of 97 journal articles and 52 book chapters, and is the editor or co-editor of four books. Dr. Eth, who is a NAMI Exemplary Psychiatrist, has been honored with the Robinson Award from the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and the Guttmacher Award, the Lima Award, and a Special Presidential Commendation from the American Psychiatric Association. Dr. Eth testified before committees of the United States Senate and the House of Representatives about the mental health effects of the World Trade Center terrorist attack.
Dr. Eth has served for many years as an expert in a forensic psychiatry in civil and criminal matters in state and federal court both for defense and plaintiff/prosecution attorneys. -
