Biography
Dr. Shafazand is a board-certified pulmonary, critical care, and sleep specialist with a Master’s degree in Health Services Research and a strong commitment to patient-centered research. Her commitment to conducting patient-centered research is exemplified by her funded research. She was the Principal Investigator (PI) for an American Sleep Medicine Foundation grant exploring prevalence of sleep disorders in Hispanic patients, the co-PI on a National Parkinson Foundation grant studying sleep disordered breathing (SDB) and its treatment on cognitive measures in patients with Parkinson’s Disease, and Co-I of a Department of Education/ National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDDR) grant, studying the prevalence of SDB, the treatment of SDB and its impact on cardio-metabolic outcomes in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI). She was the PI of the sleep section of a NIDDR TBI Registry grant, responsible for determining the prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in TBI patients and the impact of therapy on cognitive outcomes. She was awarded as PI, a Department of Defense (DoD) grant looking at sleep apnea and its treatment in patients with SCI. She is the PI of a Neilson Foundation grant evaluating intermittent hypoxia, neuroplasticity, and sleep apnea. and the PI of a study evaluating disparities in COVID-19 medical, psych-social, and financial outcomes in underserved communities in Miami-Dade and Broward County, Florida. She teaches health policy, epidemiology, and population health to dual degree MD/MPH students and in her role as Director of University of Miami MD/MPH program have mentored many students in population health research and community outreach. She has chaired several committees at ATS and plays active role undergraduate and post graduate medical education locally at at the national level. Dr. Shafazand has many publications, book chapters and serves as Associate editor of several key journals in her areas of specialty. -
