Biography
Dr. Sarah Wellik is a graduate of the University of California, Irvine where she obtained a B.S. in biological sciences and graduated Cum Laude. She went on to work in the private sector as a research associate in molecular biology before getting her medical degree from the University of California, Irvine. She completed her medical internship at Yale University and residency in ophthalmology at Boston University. Dr. Wellik subsequently did a Clinical Glaucoma Fellowship at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami. Since completing fellowship, she has remained on staff at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and the Miami Veterans Affairs Hospital. She is active in glaucoma clinical research, as well as resident and fellow training. She is a leader in state and national ophthalmologic societies and has numerous publications in peer reviewed literature. Dr. Wellik is currently an associate professor of clinical ophthalmology and is the Director of Glaucoma Services at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Broward County. -

Teaching Interests
Dr. Wellik has been focused on teaching at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute since early in her career. Her main interests are in surgical skills transfer for ophthalmologic residents and fellows for cataract and glaucoma procedures. She also gives resident didactic courses in angle- closure glaucoma and glaucoma surgical techniques. Dr. Wellik is an expert in complex cataract surgery and in Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS), and is the course director of the annual Bascom Palmer glaucoma course for continuing medical education of physicians. -
Research Interests
Dr. Wellik’s research interests are concentrated on improving glaucoma surgical outcomes, and on improving quality of life for patients with glaucoma and ocular surface disease. She has numerous publications on glaucoma surgical techniques, including being a co-investigator on the pivotal Tube Versus Trabeculectomy Trial (TVT). In addition, she has collected data on ocular surface disease in our Veteran population and studied how that impacts our ability to effectively treat glaucoma and prevent blindness in our nation’s Veterans. Dr. Wellik has also teamed with colleagues at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in a multi-center effort called the Glaucoma Research Network. This is a collaborative effort which has pooled data from a number of large glaucoma centers and has led to numerous publications advancing our understanding of how we can use visual fields to determine how glaucoma progresses. The unifying thread of Dr. Wellik’s career in academic ophthalmology is finding real-world ways to improve the lives of the more than three million Americans with glaucoma. -
