Biography
Dr. Sakir Humayun (“Hume”) Gultekin is a board-certified anatomic pathologist and neuropathologist. He completed his clinical Neurology residency in Istanbul University before moving to the US. He completed his pathology residency training at Cornell Medical Center; and fellowships in Brigham and Women’s Hospital (neuropathology), and Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (oncologic surgical pathology, experimental pathology). He worked as Pathology Dept. faculty member and attending pathologist in Mount Sinai Medical School, NY and Oregon Health and Sciences University, before moving to University of Miami in 2016. Dr. Gultekin currently serves as the Director of Neuropathology Service at the Department of Pathology, as well as co-director of UM Brain Endowment Bank, a NIH-designated biobank. He is also Director of Clinical Trials Research Innovation at the Dept. of Pathology, starting November 2020. Dr. Gultekin’s clinical interests are CNS tumor neuropathology, nerve and muscle pathology, autopsy pathology, gynecologic pathology and general oncologic surgical pathology. -

Teaching Interests
Dr. Gultekin served as pathology residency program director between 2013-2016 (OHSU), and 2017-2020 (UM/JHS). He has been lecturing in UM medical school neuroscience courses. He regularly participates in monthly interdepartmental educational conferences with Departments of Neurology, Radiology and Neurosurgery. -
Research Interests
Dr. Gultekin has had a long-time interest in paraneoplastic disease of the nervous system. Currently, his research interests include label-free (Raman stimulated) histology techniques to improve intraoperative diagnosis in surgical neuropathology, marker development in CNS tumors, as well as tissue-based studies of neurodegenerative diseases. Dr. Gultekin has over 75 peer-reviewed research papers, as well as several book chapters, online educational content, numerous meeting abstracts, national workshop leaderships and invited regional conference lectures. He has been supporting and participating in several extramurally funded research projects. He is also a member of the Protocol Review and Monitoring Committee at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. -
