Biography
Dr. Ryan Kirwan joined the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Department of Radiology in August 2025 as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Radiology. He specializes in breast and musculoskeletal imaging and brings more than a decade of experience in academic and private practice settings in the United States and Canada.
Dr. Kirwan earned his medical degree from McGill University, where he graduated on the Dean’s Honor List, and completed his radiology residency and breast imaging fellowship at Jackson Memorial Hospital/University of Miami. He also received subspecialty training in musculoskeletal imaging during his senior residency year. He is board certified by both the American Board of Radiology and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
Before returning to UM, Dr. Kirwan practiced in Alberta as a partner with Radiology Associates in Lethbridge, where he directed breast imaging and introduced tomosynthesis and automated whole-breast ultrasound (ABUS). He previously served as head of breast centers in Montana and Vermont, where he helped expand breast MRI, MR-guided procedures, genetic testing, and multidisciplinary tumor board programs.
An active researcher and educator, Dr. Kirwan has co-authored publications in Pediatric Radiology, European Journal of Nutrition, and Canadian Association of Radiologists Journal, and has presented at national and international meetings including RSNA, ARRS, and CAR. His clinical and research interests include breast MRI, image-guided procedures, musculoskeletal MRI, and imaging in oncology.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Kirwan is a competitive triathlete and Ironman finisher, with multiple qualifications for USA Triathlon national and world events. -
