Biography
Rosario Isasi, J.D., M.P.H. is a Research Associate Professor of Human Genetics in the Dr. John T. Macdonald Foundation Department of Human Genetics, the John P. Hussman Institute for Human Genomics and Interdisciplinary Stem Cell Institute. She is also an Adjunct Professor of Law at UM School of Law. She has built an international reputation as a scholar with unique expertise in international comparative law, ethics, and health disparities. Prof. Isasi’s research is devoted to identifying and analyzing the social, ethical and policy dimensions of disruptive technologies (e.g., precision, genomics, and regenerative medicine). Her work centers on the prospective identification and management of actual, perceived, or emerging socio-ethical and policy issues and challenges. It also focuses on societal attitudes towards scientific innovation and the factors shaping technological uptake, public engagement, and support. Prof. Isasi’s scholarship has contributed to national/international policy reform and the development of evidence-based professional and ethical guidelines together with the creation of research ethics curricula.
She holds many leadership roles in major national and international initiatives: Most notably, from 2017-2020 she was appointed as the President’s International Fellow of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and now serves as an Adjunct Professor at the CAS’ Institute of Zoology. She is a co-PI for the SouthEast Enrollment Center, a member of NIH’s All of Us Research Program. At the All of Us she is the co-Chair of their Committee on Access, Privacy and Policy and Security. In addition, she serves as the Ethics/Policy Advisor of the European Commission’s European Human Pluripotent Stem Cell Registry (hPSCreg). She also co-Chairs the American Society of Human Genetics’ Professional Practice & Social Implications Committee and the Ethics Committee of the International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR). Moreover, she serves as a member of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s (DARPA) Legal, Ethical, Environmental, Dual-use, and Responsible Innovation Panel and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Stem Cell Oversight Committee. -

Teaching Interests
Rosario Isasi is a Research Associate Professor of Human Genetics in the Dr. John T. Macdonald Foundation Department of Human Genetics, the John P. Hussman Institute for Human Genomics and Interdisciplinary Stem Cell Institute. She is also an Adjunct Professor of Law at UM School of Law. Her teaching is at the undergraduate and graduate levels and is interdisciplinary. Prof. Isasi’s teaching interests include a vast range of areas: research and clinical ethics, bioethics, health law and the study of the socio-ethical and legal implications of disruptive technologies (e.g., human genetics, regenerative and precision medicine). In addition, her teaching interests encompass international comparative law and health disparities.
Her work has fostered the development of curricula focusing on research integrity and continued professional education nationally and internationally, as exemplified by her work with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the American Society for Human Genetics (ASHG).
Prof. Isasi is a course Director and Instructor at both the MSO and the Law School. At MSO’s Master’s in Genomic Medicine (MD Joint Degree Program), she directs and teaches “Genomic Ethics and Public Policy (GNM 680). For the Law School, she created the first course devoted to analyzing the interconnected social, ethical and policy implications of advances in human genetics and genomics, and directs and teaches “Genomic Medicine, Ethics and the Law” (LAW 544A). -

Rosario Isasi is a Research Associate Professor of Human Genetics in the Dr. John T. Macdonald Foundation Department of Human Genetics and holds multiple appointments, including at the John P. Hussman Institute for Human Genomics where she directs the Program in Genome Ethics and Policy, is a member of the Interdisciplinary Stem Cell Institute and Adjunct Professor of Law at UM School of Law. Prof. Isasi’s has built an international reputation as a scholar with unique expertise in international comparative law, ethics, and health disparities. Her research is devoted to identifying and analyzing the social, ethical and policy dimensions of disruptive technologies (e.g., precision, genomics, and regenerative medicine). In addition, her scholarly work also includes regulatory reform and educational programs, such as the development of national/international policy, of evidence-based professional and ethical guidelines as well as of research ethics curricula. -
