Biography
Richard A. Preston, M.D., MSPH, MBA, is Professor of Medicine, Chief of the Division of Clinical Pharmacology, Principal Investigator and Medical Director of the Clinical Pharmacology Phase I Research Unit at the Miller School of Medicine, University of Miami. Dr. Preston received his medical degree from the University of California, San Diego and completed his residency and nephrology fellowship at the University of Miami. Additionally, he has received a Master of Business Administration and a Master of Science in Public Health, both from the University of Miami.
Dr. Preston is board certified in Internal Medicine, Nephrology, and Clinical Pharmacology. He has conducted more than 400 clinical research investigations as principal investigator including more than 150 studies of pharmacokinetics/safety in patients with renal impairment and more than 150 studies of pharmacokinetics /safety in patients with hepatic impairment.
He has also conducted original pathophysiological investigations of mechanisms of hyperkalemia following dual renin-angiotensin-aldosterone blockade in chronic kidney disease, evidence supporting the existence of a novel gastrointestinal-renal kaliuretic signaling axis in humans, characterization of potassium-induced natriuresis in postmenopausal hypertensive women, and mechanisms of sodium sensitivity in metabolic syndrome. -
