Biography
Raymond Balise, Ph.D., is a research professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. As a biostatistician and data scientist, he applies statistical computing, data visualization and machine learning to research involving cancer, substance use, mental health and HIV.
Dr. Balise’s work includes developing analytical tools to monitor patterns of substance use disorder and model relapse risk among people receiving treatment for opioid addiction. He also helped develop the analytics underlying SCAN360, a web-based platform that presents cancer rates and related health and social factors across Florida.
Before joining the University of Miami, Dr. Balise spent 17 years at Stanford University School of Medicine as a biostatistician, senior lecturer and leader within its statistical programming group. An award-winning educator, he teaches biostatistics, data management, statistical programming and machine learning. He is also co-author of Presenting Medical Statistics: From Proposal to Publication, a guide to statistical analysis, interpretation and data visualization. -
