Biography
Dr. Rafael Miyashiro Nunes dos Santos was born in São Paulo, Brazil and is a graduate of the Universidade de São Paulo medical school, in which he won a prize as best surgical student in his class, the “Edmundo Vasconcelos Award”. He completed his general surgery residence, colorectal surgery fellowship, transplant fellowship, and resident chief position in the same institution. He is affiliated with the Brazilian College of Digestive Surgery as Expert Member since February 2018.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Miyashiro was a founder member of the Brazilian Association for Intestinal Cancer prevention in 2014. Their main objective is to bring awareness of the importance of prevention and early diagnosis of intestinal cancer to physicians and the general population.
In 2013, Dr. Miyashiro joined Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) as a research fellow for his PhD. research in xenotransplantation, more specifically in new ways to humanize pigs for xenotransplantation. After completion of his research in 2016, he became a transplant surgery fellow at IUPUI.
After his second transplant fellowship, Dr. Miyashiro joined University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital as an assistant professor. His main interests are liver, intestine and multivisceral transplantation, in addition to experimental research in the field of Xenotransplantation. -
