Biography
Dr. Pradip M. Pattany is a Research Professor in the Department of Radiology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, with secondary appointments in Biomedical Engineering and Psychology. An internationally recognized imaging scientist, he has dedicated his career to advancing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques for clinical and translational research, particularly in neuroscience, neurology, and spinal cord injury.
Dr. Pattany earned his B.Tech. with honors in Applied Physics from the University of Bradford, followed by a master’s degree in Instrumentation and Analytical Sciences from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. He then completed his Ph.D. in Biology and Medical Engineering with honors at the University of Claude Bernard in Lyon, France.
Before joining the University of Miami in 1993, Dr. Pattany gained extensive industry and academic experience. He served as a staff scientist at Picker International’s NMR Division in Cleveland and as Director of Research and Development at MRI of Colorado. He also held an adjunct faculty position in radiology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. At Miami, he has risen through the academic ranks, serving as Assistant Professor (1993–2005), Associate Professor (2005–2018), and Research Professor since 2018.
Dr. Pattany has made pioneering contributions to MRI methods development. He is credited with several patents, including innovations in motion artifact suppression and high-velocity flow imaging. His scholarly output includes over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, spanning topics such as MR angiography of the spine, spinal cord injury, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and advanced magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
His work has been cited in leading journals including Neurology, AJNR: American Journal of Neuroradiology, Frontiers in Neuroscience, and NMR in Biomedicine. He has been a co-investigator on numerous federally funded grants from the NIH, NIA, NINDS, and NCI, contributing to studies on Alzheimer’s disease, vascular cognitive impairment, ALS, multiple sclerosis, and traumatic brain injury. His collaborative research also extends to translational applications in cardiology, prostate cancer, and regenerative medicine. Notably, he has played a critical role in multimodal imaging initiatives, combining MRI with spectroscopy, diffusion, and perfusion methods to improve diagnostic accuracy and guide therapy.
Dr. Pattany has served the academic community as an editor and reviewer for the American Journal of Neuroradiology and as a reviewer for ISMRM. He has been an invited speaker at international conferences in Australia, China, France, and across the United States, where he has lectured on diffusion imaging, MR spectroscopy, and fast imaging techniques. His achievements have been recognized with honors including the RSNA Cum Laude Award, the IR 100 Award for innovation, and the U.S. Olympic Committee Gold Medal Award.
Through his innovative research, teaching, and mentorship, Dr. Pattany has advanced the field of MRI and continues to contribute to the University of Miami’s leadership in imaging science. -
