Dr. Phabiola Herrera Aldana is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine at the University of Miami. She also serves as Co-Leader of the PCCSM Division Clinical Research Center. With over 15 years of experience in global health research, Dr. Herrera’s work focuses on cardiopulmonary diseases, sleep disorders, and non-communicable diseases, particularly in low-resource and underserved communities. Her expertise includes scientific program management, cross-cultural collaboration, and conducting observational and interventional studies in minority populations. Dr. Herrera has led several research initiatives, including projects on the impact of sleep apnea in HIV patients and the effects of air pollution on cardiopulmonary health in low- and middle-income countries. She has been mentored by Dr. Naresh Punjabi on sleep-related research, exploring how race and HIV status contribute to sleep apnea and cardiometabolic risks.
In November 2022, Dr. Herrera was awarded the Miami CFAR Pilot Award for her project entitled Developing REsearch on Advancing Mental and Sleep health (DREAMS) in Women of Reproductive Age Living with HIV. She is also deeply involved in scientific collaboration and community-based research. Dr. Herrera has received multiple honors, including the Fogarty & Ellison Global Overseas Fellowship and the Novartis Vaccines Award for her work in epidemiology. In addition, she is a founding member of the Peruvian Association for Science, Innovation & Technology in the U.S. (PASIT) and has contributed to numerous publications on critical care epidemiology, air pollution, and mental health.
