Biography
Paulo S. Pinheiro, M.D., Ph.D., is a cancer epidemiologist at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and a research professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
His research uses large-scale cancer registry and surveillance data to identify factors associated with cancer development and disparities in cancer risk among diverse populations.
Much of Dr. Pinheiro’s research examines differences within broad population groups that may be obscured in traditional cohort studies. His work has addressed cancer risk among Hispanic or Latino, Black and Asian populations; the causes of liver cancer; lung cancer among people who have never smoked; adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma associated with human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1, or HTLV-1; and associations between social factors, such as marital status, and cancer incidence.
Dr. Pinheiro serves as lead investigator for the Epidemiology and Surveillance Program of the Sylvester Firefighter Cancer Initiative. In this role, he leads the development and analysis of the first population-based firefighter cancer registry examining long-term cancer incidence and mortality risks.
Dr. Pinheiro has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications. He has served on National Institutes of Health grant review panels and participated in national initiatives led by the National Cancer Institute, American Cancer Society and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. -

Research Interests
Dr. Pinheiro’s research lies at the intersection of population heterogeneity, cancer etiology, prevention, and disparities. Using large population-based cancer registry and surveillance data, his work seeks to move beyond traditional descriptive measures of incidence, survival, and mortality to uncover etiologic patterns and opportunities for cancer prevention across diverse populations. -
