Biography
Nelson Arboleda, PhD, is an associate professor of global health in the Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He teaches courses that examine global public health challenges, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, and mentors students in areas such as global health preparedness, health systems strengthening, and health equity.
Dr. Arboleda serves as director of the Office of the Americas within the Secretary’s Office at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. In this role, he is the senior point of contact for engagement with countries across North, Central, and South America and the Caribbean.
Previously, Dr. Arboleda served as country director for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the Dominican Republic, where he led public health programs addressing HIV, tuberculosis, vector-borne diseases, influenza, and emergency preparedness. He also served as CDC regional director for Central America, based in Guatemala City, where he coordinated U.S. government investments in global health and supported implementation of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief in partnership with regional ministries of health.
Dr. Arboleda received training in public health at the University of Miami and the Harvard Kennedy School. He joined the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2004 as an Epidemic Intelligence Service officer in the National Center for Infectious Diseases.
His additional experience includes leadership roles in vaccine safety and pandemic preparedness, as well as work with international partners, including the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and national governments. His global health work has included assignments in India, Honduras, Venezuela, Colombia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Dr. Arboleda has authored and coauthored scientific publications and has received multiple awards in recognition of his contributions to public health. -
